That's what everyone is saying! With no word of a lie, people are literally catching fish in the hundreds in a single day! I've never seen sturgeon lake this active!

what is funny because I have found quite a health populus of fish there, like in all size ranges. well not the super huge trophy sizes but all good fish. Our boats best day was 125 for 4 anglers. I was told by some friends in the fish and wildlife that the regs are going to change at sturgeon. I hope its a slot size for both pike and walleye, There is no reason why that lake can't be a trophy status lake.

I was actually reading in alberta outdoorsman that they are proposing smaller size limits for some lakes in this area.

Sturgeon Lake despite a shallow depth of only 35 feet has many diverse structural elements including several mid lake humps. These can easily be located with hydrographic charts available from area tackle stores or the fishery information signs at major access points. Navionics has produced a new 2010 edition of it Lake Hot Maps hydrogaphic chart software for Lowrance and Hummingbird GPS units which includes most major lakes in Alberta including Snipe, Sturgeon and Lesser Slave. The major structural elements are commonly fished but the key to consistent angling on Sturgeon is to key less obvious depth changes with notable transition zones such as sand to mud interfaces, sand to weedlines, etc.

Just to add to what FishDoc was saying, I've recently purchaced a bathymetrical chart my Garmin GPS, it has all of the depths, contours, humps and holes of most of the lakes in alberta. I've used it a few times since I bought it in January and it's come in very handy!

FishDoc Member Posts: 10 | I attended a meeting in November and the proposal was to go to one walleye over 43 cm for 2010. The Sturgeon Lake Fishery committee was not included in these discussions to the dismay of its members. The committee believes in innovative and lake specific regulations which seems contrary to current fishery biologist philosophy of a provincial based approach. It seems that a tag based approach is the new provincial direction possibly incorporating a slot. in more waterbodies around Alberta.
