Hey folks, so I spooled my new bait casting reel with some braided line but due to the small diameter, it binds up when I cast.  The line only goes out about 20 - 30 feet.  Any help would be great. Thanks.

what size of braid did you go with? I like a 20lbs powerpro.

I use Berkley Fireline on mine. I have an Abu Garcia Pro Max and I love it! I had a hard time figuring out how to cast it and got the hang of it after a while. I took it out to Swan Lake yesterday and realised I'm out of practice. Have a look at this link, there was some discusion on this issue last year.

I use an Abu Garcia  Black Max with 10lb. Fireline and it works good, but I am contemplating using 10 -12lb. Maxima  Ultra Green and see how it performs.

On thin lines I found it is important to keep tension on the line, so it does not get any loose raps on the spool otherwise if it does it tends to jam or worse it spits out a birds nest. Also over spooling while casting can cause it to bind quickly and bird nest too.

So the thing I try to remember is Tension, Tension, Tension, if a person has that down you can cast all day with any line you want.

I have heard bad things about the Maxima, it like to stay in the slinky form when tension is off the line

Spool it tight so it doesn't bite into itself, when you go to set up to cast just remember to set it so the lure is just barely creeping down and you will have fewer backlashes. As you get better you will find you use your thumb more then the brake to control the line.
